Can Anyone Learn to Sing? Yes! At Any Age and Any Stage
“I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.” — Bruce Lee
That’s the part a lot of people forget when it comes to learning a new skill.
Or re-learning an old one they haven’t picked up in years.
Especially singers.
Nobody expects to get in a car for the first time at 16 and merge onto the highway like they’ve been doing it for twenty years.
You stall.
You overcorrect.
You white-knuckle the steering wheel and pray nobody is watching.
Same thing if you used to sing in choir and haven’t sung a single song since the kids were born.
Singing is a skill.
It can be taught.
It can be learned.
It can also be re-learned from whatever muscle memory you built over the years.
By anyone. At any time. At any stage of life.
Even if you’re starting from the ground up.
Even if you never sang a single note in your life.
And I get that 10,000 hours might sound a little daunting.
It should. That’s about how long it takes to become a master at something.
But right now, you don’t need to worry about becoming a master.
You don’t need 10,000 hours as a prerequisite to start.
All you need to do is choose a song you love to listen to or sing along with… and give yourself permission to start.
I could get into all the “good for you” reasons. The mental health piece. What it does for your nervous system. All of that’s real.
But that’s not why I keep coming back to this.
Singing brings joy. And we could all use a little more of that right now.
Last week, the world lost Dolly Parton.

Now imagine if Dolly had kept her voice to herself?
We never would’ve gotten Jolene.
Or I Will Always Love You.
Or 9 to 5.
Or that little girl in a coat of many colors who made a million people feel less small.
We never would’ve had the songs that got sung in kitchens, in cars, at karaoke, and at funerals.
The ones people reached for when they were heartbroken, pissed off, proud, or just trying to feel like themselves again.
And that’s the part I don’t want YOU to miss.
The chance to share your voice and your stories with the world.
I mean, as cool as it probably would be, you don't have to become Dolly.
And you don’t have to have perfect pitch.
Or have a 10-octave vocal range to sing.
Let alone be "good".
You just have to pick a song you love today and sing it.
Not for a grade.
Not for a coach.
Not for the internet.
For YOU.
Because the “I can’t sing” sob-story we tell ourselves is what stops more singers from being born.
More voices the world deserves to hear... including yours.
So if you’ve been waiting for permission to start... well, here it is:
The Singing / Straw has helped 33,000+ singers around the world learn how to sing more confidently (and have more fun doing it): at any age and any stage of their life.
