Are You Straw-ggling to Switch From 2 Straws to 1?

Are You Straw-ggling to Switch From 2 Straws to 1?

Heh. See what I did there?

Right… so this question came in hot last week inside the Singing / Straw Studio App:

“When should I switch from 2 straws to one? Two is definitely easier… it’s hard to get any sound through one. Should I just keep going with two and one day I’ll magically be able to do one?”

Now, as much as I wish I could wave a wand and grant you single-straw mastery à la fairy godmother vocal coach, here’s the truth:

🎤 If you’re struggling to get any sound through one straw? Maybe you’re not quite yet ready to cut a straw loose just yet (which is totally OK btw).

In fact, staying with two straws (or bumping to the 4mm if you're using a PRO set) might be exactly what your voice needs right now.

There is absolutely no shame in working with a configuration that allows you to sing with freedom, stability, and flow.

Trying to jump to one straw before you’re ready is like skipping from crawling to sprinting in heels while balancing a tray of champagne.

Sure, someone somewhere on TikTok probably did it.

That doesn’t mean you should.

So When Do You Move to One?

Short answer: when it starts to feel like your voice could handle it.

Longer answer: it could be next week.

It could be next month.

Next November.

Heck, some of the most seasoned singers in our community never switch to one straw because two works perfectly for their voice.

The point is progress, not punishment.

If your voice feels supported, responsive, and strong while using two straws?

Then that’s your zone.

Camp out there as long as you need to!

No badge of honor required ✌️

Here's Where It Gets Good...

You know what does help you improve?

✅ Recording your daily progress
✅ Tracking your consistency
Not beating yourself up when a note sounds more Marge Simpson than Mariah Carey

Seriously!

Recordings are like little time machines for your voice.

You don’t realize how much progress you’ve made until you listen back and go, “Wait… was that me?!”

That’s why I always recommend keeping a little vocal journal or, at the very least, making weekly recordings.

Not to critique, but to celebrate.

Case in Point: Linda 🙌

One of our amazing singers in the app recently shared this:

(Also, I would die for you, Linda.)

The lesson?

It’s not about hitting high notes faster, it’s about building consistency, unlocking ease, and feeling excited about your voice again.

And yes, sometimes that means chilling with two straws and vibing out to some slidey hoos for a while.

TL;DR:

  • Struggling to get sound through one straw? Stick with two.

  • Lame, I know but… practice DOES NOT always make perfect.

  • Record yourself! Celebrate your wins. Rest when needed.

  • No one gets a trophy for blowing the hardest through a tiny piece of metal.

  • You (and your voice) deserve a little bit of grace and patience

At the end of the day, this might be a completely new experience for you.

And even if you’ve been singing since you were practically in diapers doesn’t mean your vocal folds have “straw phonation” built into their muscle memory yet.

That doesn’t make you any less great of a singer than you are!
