The 5-Word Prompt That Changed How Nicole Thinks About Singing

The 5-Word Prompt That Changed How Nicole Thinks About Singing

We just wrapped up our 7-Day Mini Singing / Straw Challenge inside the app.

Every single day, our members were tasked with picking one quick video to warm up their voice and then answering a simple daily prompt.

Just a tiny, 5-minute commitment to show up for their vocal routine.

Because let’s be real…

Most singers absolutely hate warming up.

It’s hard.

It’s time-consuming.

It’s boring.

And it completely sucks the fun out of singing.

And if you’re not having fun… you’re probably wondering why even bother in the first place?

That is exactly why we ran this challenge.

To prove that your warm-ups don't have to be a power hour of Do-Re-Mi-Fa-Sol-La-Ti-Da in order to be effective.

And hands down, one of my absolute favorite responses of the entire week came from a singer named Nicole.

She took a look at one of our daily prompts—What helped you show up today?—and responded with this:

“Easy. I GET to sing!!! I never want to take it for granted, using the voice God gave me & resources I couldn't even dream of, & some I couldn't even fathom, growing up...even through discouragement (like yesterday), another day means a God-given opportunity to learn & work through it (feeling grateful) ☺️💕”

Read that again: “I GET to sing!!!”

WOW.

It's so easy  to take your voice for granted, especially if you’ve been singing for a long time.

We rely on it for SO many things.

But because we’re singers, we think that makes us all super-humans.

Who must hold ourselves to ridiculously high standards that no singer can realistically achieve.

I don’t know where the heck we got the audacity to think that way.

But I’m so glad we have singers like Nicole to bring us all back down to earth 😅.

Because even though I believe in my heart of hearts that singing is a skill that can be trained and developed over time…  it’s not something everyone believes they can do.

Or chooses to do.

And that makes people like you special.

Every single day, you choose to share your voice with the world in ways that others don’t.

And whether you want to believe it or not, you make this world a whole lot brighter every single time you do 🙂

Seeing Nicole’s response has inspired me to practice more gratitude in my own daily life lately, too.

Not just for the big, life-changing wins.

But for the little things, too.

Like finally being able to take my children to Europe for the very first time as a family.

Or sneaking away for a quick girls' weekend with some of my absolute best friends.

Or a husband who has literally been trying to throw me a birthday party for years and finally got to make it happen, ha!

If there’s one thing you do for yourself this week, I want you to take a note out of Nicole’s book.

Stop, take a breath, and answer this exact prompt: What helped you show up today?

Whether you use your Singing / Straw for 5 minutes or just sing along to your favorite showtune in the car, give yourself permission to enjoy the gift of your voice today.
